Naruto is a japanese manga series written and illustrated by Masashi Kishimoto with an anime adaptation.

 The main character, Naruto Uzumaki, is a loud, hyperactive, unpredictable adolescent ninja who constantly searches for recognition and aspires to become a Hokage, the ninja in the village
acknowledged as the leader and the strongest of all. 

There was an incident that happened back then in the Hidden Village, Konoha.

A nine-tailed demon attacked Konoha and the fourth Hokage sacrificed his life in order to seal the demon into a child called Uzumaki Naruto.

This explains why Naruto wants to gain recognition, due to people knowing that he has the nine-tailed demon attached in him, people usually would avoid him or even call him names. 
However, when Naruto joins the ninja academy, he started to have friends and as well as great mentors.
